This partnership aims to promote sustainable yachting in the Mediterranean while strengthening Saint-Tropez’s role as a key player in eco-responsible yachting and tourism.

During an official meeting at the harbor master’s office on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, Ms. Sylvie Siri, Mayor of Saint-Tropez and Regional Councillor, alongside Mr. Michel Perrault, Deputy Mayor in charge of Culture, the Port, and Maritime Areas, Mr. Tony Oller, Port Director, and Mr. Bernard d’Alessandri, Vice President of the SEA Index, signed this new collaboration. This partnership will enable the Port of Saint-Tropez to recognize and promote SEA Index-certified yachts while actively encouraging yacht owners and crews to reduce their CO2 emissions.

What is the SEA Index?

Created in 2021 by the Superyacht Eco Association, the SEA Index provides independent certification, verified by Lloyd’s Register, and a RINA consumption methodology for yachts over 25 meters. The goal is to promote more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly boating. This initiative is part of the “Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting” project, led by the Yacht Club of Monaco. Yacht owners who achieve a rating of three stars or more on the SEA Index scale enjoy various exclusive benefits at partner ports.

What are the benefits in Saint-Tropez?

Yacht owners who receive a three-star rating or higher on the SEA Index scale gain access to exclusive advantages, similar to those offered to members of the Saint-Tropez Lounge Club. These owners must declare their rating and provide the SEA Index certificate verifying the rating at the harbor master’s office reception or when making a reservation.

What benefits for Yacht Owners?

In addition to receiving details on their yacht’s CO2 rating and enjoying the benefits offered by partner ports, being a member of the SEA Index allows owners to be part of an awareness program as low-impact, ocean-friendly yachts with reduced CO2 emissions, as well as a community of like-minded individuals sharing similar values.

The Port of Saint-Tropez’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

By joining the SEA Index, the Port of Saint-Tropez positions itself as a leader in eco-responsible yachting in the Gulf, in line with its already well-established environmental policy. Tony Oller, the Port’s Director, highlights the importance of this initiative:

Our membership in the SEA Index highlights our collective and responsible commitment to better welcoming boaters in port, making our port even more attractive while promoting eco-friendly actions to protect the environment. The goal is to raise awareness of our actions, encourage users to get involved, and change practices in the long term.”

Concrete Actions Already in Place

The Port of Saint-Tropez is recognized for its proactive approach to sustainability. In December 2023, it received the “Ports Propres” certification, rewarding its efforts to reduce its ecological footprint and protect marine ecosystems. Key actions include:

  • Innovative multifunctional MELTEM pontoon (One Concept Marine): This pontoon is equipped with solar panels, water recovery systems, and installations promoting marine biodiversity.
  • “I Sail, I Sort” Program: This initiative encourages marine waste prevention and recycling throughout the port.
  • “Alliance Posidonia” Program: Aims to raise awareness and establish conditions that foster the preservation of Posidonia.
  • 2024 Goal: “Clean Ports: Active in Biodiversity” Certification: The port aims to achieve this certification to enhance its efforts to protect marine flora and fauna.

Towards More Responsible Nautical Tourism

By joining the SEA Index network, the Port of Saint-Tropez is part of a global movement encouraging more responsible practices in the yachting industry. According to Bernard d’Alessandri, Vice President of the SEA Index:

We are delighted to welcome the Port of Saint-Tropez into the SEA Index network, and we are eager to roll out our flagship CO2 emissions assessment tool in this iconic location. Already recognized as an excellent port for its service and style, the integration of the SEA Index will consolidate the Port of Saint-Tropez as a leader in sustainable development.

By combining technological innovations and ecological initiatives, the Port of Saint-Tropez continues to assert itself as a must-visit destination for yachting, while addressing current environmental challenges. This approach not only enhances the port’s attractiveness but also contributes to preserving the natural heritage of the Mediterranean.
